History of Happy Canyon

White settlers of Rounds Top, modern-day Happy Canyon, frequented the trails worn by Indians, especially Arapahoe, Cheyenne, and Utes.  In the mid-1800s, books about Colorado reached pioneers and drew them to the West.  Many panned for gold along the Platte River and Cherry Creek.  Settlers established sawmills at Daniel's Creek and other means of livelihood, including mining, farming, ranching, trading, etc.

Happy Canyon got its name when a guitar playing musician stayed with homesteaders, the John Schweiger Family, and sang happy tunes.  John was inspired to call his ranch "Happy Canyon."  Over time, this large family became prominent in Douglas County.  Their original ranch buildings are east of I-25 at Exit 191.

Thousands of spruce and pine trees were planted by planted in Happy Canyon settler John M Chase after he arrived in 1884.  Chase formed the Happy Canyon Land and Cattle Company and amassed 3000 acres.  Back in the day, his son, a general, brought his troops to Round Top for target practice!
